William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time. His plays are still studied in schools today, and his work has influenced generations of artists. But who was he? Although he began writing about the same time as another important writer, William Carlos Williams, he is remembered more prominently for his plays than his poetry. He was an accomplished poet, but many of his best-known works were written for the stage.

During his lifetime, he wrote some 37 plays, but only three or four that are still regularly performed today. He died at age 52 on April 23rd, 1616.
